The Denisovans are a distinct archaic hominin species that ranged across Asia as late as 14,500 years ago. Denisovans are known from few remains, and, consequently, most of what is known about them comes from DNA evidence, which indicates they interbred with modern humans. Tibetans have significant Denisovan ancestry, with about 4–6% of the DNA of Melanesians (South East Asians), Native Australians, and around 7-8% in Papuans.

There is also evidence of interbreeding with the local Neanderthal populations. Denisova Cave is in south-central Siberia, Russia, in the Altai Mountains near the border with Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia.
