The Sami, also called Lapp, are an endangered Finno-Ugric-speaking people inhabiting northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of Russia. The origin of the European Sami is obscure, but their language is not Indo-European, and like the Basque of Iberia have a genetic and linguistic make up unique in Europe.

Lapland is Finlands northernmost region, a sparsely populated area bordering Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea. Its known for its vast subarctic wilderness, ski resorts and natural phenomena including the midnight sun and the Northern Lights. The homeland of the indigenous Sami people, which extends into neighboring countries, centers on the far north.
