The Sami, also called Lapp, are an endangered Finno-Ugric-speaking people inhabiting northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of Russia. The origin of the European Sami is obscure, but their language is not Indo-European, and like the Basque of Iberia have a genetic and linguistic make up unique in Europe.

Lapland is Finlands northernmost region, a sparsely populated area bordering Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea. The homeland of the indigenous Sami people, which extends into neighboring countries, centers on the far north.
